Big
names unite to snare rare white horse - 27th March
2008
(Credit:
Gold Coast Bulletin)
"YOU'RE
going to Newcastle, you've gotta like the piss."
With
those words John Singleton met and then christened
the latest acquisition to his family with a mouthful
of Bluetongue beer.
"She
actually didn't like the Bluetongue early and
I thought 'well I hope she's not a (Tooheys) New
drinker," he said, "but then, 'boom',
she took that big swallow and I knew she was one
of us."
Never
before had there been so much interest in an individual
horse at the Magic Millions complex.

With
storms and thunder brewing in the background and
the likes of Singleton, Gai and Robbie Waterhouse,
Gerry Harvey, Graeme Rogerson and other buyers
in the ageing shed, something special was destined
to happen.
The
crowd swarmed on the pre-sale parade ring to get
a glimpse of the rare white horse.
She
knew she was the star and put on a show.
There
was kicking, bucking and attempts to get away
from the strapper.
After
10 minutes she left the parade yard and headed
down the chute and towards the sales ring.
The
punters then swarmed into the sales precinct where
it soon became standing room only -- in some areas
the people were 12 deep.
Almost
everyone had a camera or took a photograph on
their mobile phone.
Stud
staff, buyers and stickybeaks all had their eyes
glued on the white filly they call Spook.
When
bidding started there was a hush around the ring.
There
were three main bidders, with offers starting
about $100,000 and jumping for several minutes
before the hammer eventually came down for $270,000.
It
was bought by Newcastle trainer Kris Lees.
Then
the fun began -- Singo was involved and so was
Andrew 'Joey' Johns, who had been on the phone
while the bidding took place.
A media
scrum formed around the table where the buyers
sat and Singo explained the grand plan.
He
would race the horse with the former league superstar,
and eight Newcastle Knights fans from pubs in
the Hunter region would win shares.
The
horse would be called Bluetongue, after the beer
he has a heavy involvement in.
Another
addition to the John Singleton marketing empire
was born.
"Look
at the price of advertising," he said in
justification of his addition.
Some
would argue that despite the horse being a close
relation to racing superstar Might and Power,
being white would ruin its chances of being a
racetrack star -- and with good reason -- the
handful of white horses that have raced have been
far from champions.
However,
Singo and Lees have a plan.
The
horse will be spelled only at night and remain
in the stable when the sun is out.
There
will be special rugs and special care for her
eyes.
"Look
at her, there's nothing wrong with her, if she
wasn't white there would have been a stack of
people after her," he said.
"We
had a limit of $200,000 but I heard the Japs were
on it.
"I've
just done Kokoda so it made me competitive."
She
is one of the only 17 white horses registered
with the Australian Stud Book and one of just
over 100 around the globe.
Former
superstar jockey Larry Olsen was on hand when
Singo met his new darling and agreed with the
assessment.
"I
might make a comeback and ride her," he joked.
After
a lengthy photo shoot outside the filly's stable,
Singo had to go and do a radio interview about
business issues.
Bluetongue
was then returned to her stables and back to being
a regular horse. Perhaps today the world will
find out if horses suffer from hangovers.
John's
blonde filly takes centre stage - 27th March 2008
(Credit:
Gold Coast Bulletin)
A
White filly took centre stage yesterday, but it
appears a blonde filly is John Singleton's most
cherished girl.
The
woman who Singleton is believed to have been dating
for over a year -- Gosford hairdresser Yvette
Hartman -- was by the Magic Millions co-owner's
side all day yesterday.
She
sat at his table during the sales and the pair
walked around the sales complex together laughing
and enjoying life.
It
appears the Gold Coast is a special place for
the couple.
On
Magic Millions Day last year, the pair first appeared
in public at a race day function at the Gold Coast
Turf Club.
They
have since been seen together at a number of Sydney
and Central Coast functions.
Yesterday,
dressed in a purple singlet top and denim shorts,
the glamorous woman and Singleton looked relaxed
in each other's company.
When
he bought a highly- publicised white filly, Singleton
invited Ms Hartman to join him as he inspected
the new purchase.
When
asked who Ms Hartman was, a Magic Millions staffer
replied: "His partner."
The
Magic Millions co-owner has enjoyed a colourful
love life.
He
has had six wives, with the most recent being
family lawyer Julie Martin.
The
pair are rumoured to have agreed on a $50 million
divorce settlement.
Another
ex-wife is former Miss World Belinda Green.

MILLIONS - FULL SISTER TO CATECHUCHU TO SHINE AT MAGIC
MILLIONS
Media Release
Sunday, 3 December, 2006
For immediate release
A full sister to yesterday's Group Three WA Champion
Fillies Stakes (1600m) winner Catechuchu will go under
the hammer at next month's Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions
Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.
A
member of the powerful David Hayes stable, Catechuchu
made it back to back stakes wins when she scored an
emphatic win in the feature three-year-old fillies
event. The win helped ease the frustration for Hayes
following the narrow defeat of stablemate Confectioner
in the Group One Railway Stakes just 40 minutes earlier.
With
premier jockey Damien Oliver in the saddle, Catechuchu
sat off a hot speed set by Bella Pia before coming
with a strong finishing burst to hit the front about
200 metres from home and racing clear to win by a
length and a quarter.
Catechuchu
was sent to Perth after her fighting win at her previous
start in the listed Twilight Glow Stakes at Sandown
in Melbourne.
The
win provided a great boost to Lot 171, the sister
to Catechuchu, who will be offered during the first
session of the Magic Millions sale on January 11.
Like
Catechuchu the yearling filly is a daughter of Danehill's
Golden Slipper winning son Catbird and from the top
producing Dahar mare Noble Fleur.
Noble
Fleur, a placegetter in Adelaide during her racetrack
career, is a half sister to the stakes winners Toy
Image and Lucky Witch.
The
latter is the dam of three stakes winners - Spirit
of Westbury, Lucky Diva and Duke of Westbury.
Consigned
by Swettenham Stud (as agent), Lot 171 is BOBS eligible.
She
is one of 31 yearlings by Catbird catalogued for the
Magic Millions sale and one of 27 consigned by Swettenham
Stud.
Other members of the quality Swettenham draft are
by sires including Anabaa, Bianconi, Danehill Dancer,
Danzero, Exceed and Excel, Flying Spur, Fusaichi Pegasus,
General Nediym, Hold That Tiger, Redoute's Choice,
Rory's Jester, Tale of the Cat and Testa Rossa.
